start up (msconfig)

Post by mike02 » Mon Nov 05, 2007 11:01 pm

When i go to the start up diaglog box through msconfig i notice programs that are starting up that i dont want to,
some music programs mostly.
I unchecked them to speed up the computer when it starts but there are other programs i don't recognize or know anything about
how can i determine which programs are important at startup compared to those that are not?

as usual, thanks in advance

The first thing you can do is look at the Command details in the msconfig utility.

Click on the seperator to the right of the Command title in the Startup list and you will be able to drag it out a bit to see more details.

Once you can see the details, you may be able to recognise what program the item is associated with. For most of the items, that may be enough for you to be satisfied. Security software will be one of the most important to leave in the list.

If there's any you still aren't sure about, you could try searching in Google for the name of the file/process. You can find a lot of information through searches, and it won't take long to find what you want to know.

If you are still stuck, post back here with the name of the item, we should be able to advise you.

Download StartupList and use it to produce a report of what is running on startup. Post the contents of the report here and we'll take a look.

1. On the page from the link you'll see Startuplist with a choice of sites to download from. Pick one and download the program. Save it to a folder or desktop.

2. Run the program - save the log file.

3. Copy the text from the log, post it here.
