Hi Richard,

Does the PC start OK in normal mode?

I think the first thing to try is a repair install - you will need the Windows XP disk to that. Do you have this?

Hi back,

Xp boots normally, problem only going into safe mode. Tried to boot to safe mode from msconfig, lead to endless cycle of reboots untill I fixed it in repair console :idunno:
I do have install disc.

Regards
Richard

Do you get the same thing if you use F8 (or F5) to get to safe mode staright from bootup?

I'm assuming you know how to do that.

I think you might need to carry out a repair install of XP. A slipstreamed CD will make life easier - have a read of this thread :

Dave
I am in the process of downloading the necessary tools and backing up everything. Will take a while as I have to do some other stuff today. I have the XPSP2 install disc, my install is patched up to date. Can slipstreaming include all the patches should I need to use it?

Thank You
Richard

Before you do that try this

Download & run the safe mode fixhere
Extract to your desktop, now you have a new file on your desktop called SafeBoot.reg
Double click and allow it to merge into your registry.

Try Safe Mode now.
VISTA
XPsp2
Avast (of course)

Essexboy-too late!
I have already done a clean install, just catching up getting things back to where I want them, but I will treasure that zip file for next time :dohhh:
I tried a repair install but no help, problem persisted.
I had Daemon Tools installed and that is probably the source of the problem according to my research and my logs. It seems to interfere with some registry files, hopefully, the Windows emulator will not cause a problem as I store a lot of my backups as iso files, and I like to have access to them without burning.

I guess that I got a clean install of my graphic drivers this time!!!!

Thank you for the help

Hi again
Just some info on my problem that might help somebody else. Problem seemed to be caused by a system file  Daemon Tools loads during safe mode startup. You have the option not to load this during safe mode boot but this didn't work for me. I probably caused the problem by leaving the virtual drive loaded all the time-just didn't think of it. Too late to test this as I have already clean installed XP. I have gone through a lot of software over the years so a clean install was a good idea, despite all the hassles. In researching this issue, I found that a some of people were having boot problems after installing Daemon Tools. I think that I will stick to the Windows emulator from now on. I am not condemning Daemon Tools as there could have been other contributing factors.

Thanks to Dave and Essexboy for your help. I will keep that safe mode zip for saving me in the future.

All the best

Richard
