Error: "Your operating system is not configured to run this application"

Post by Eric » Fri Nov 30, 2007 3:32 pm

Hi,

I am new to this forum but would really appreciate your assistance with an issue affecting my PC. Anytime I try to open an excel or word file I am getting an error message that "Your operating system is not configured to run this application". Please let me know if there is anything I can do to resolve this issue.

Thank you - Eric

Have you only recently installed Office? Or updated, changed Office?

Have you always had this problem, or is it just recently? If it's recent, were there any changes or software installed prior to it happening?

If you cannot pinpoint something that happend before getting the problem, then I would suggest a repair install of Office - you will need the Office disks to do that.

The other option is to try a system restore to a time before the problem appeared.

I had a new hard drive put in a few months ago but otherwise I haven't updated or changed Office. The problem just occurred yesterday.  The only thing I have run of late is install an update for MSN Premium.

Would you mind telling me how to do a system restore?

I appreciate your help. Thank you.

Hi Eric,

Go to Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools and then System Restore.

It should open set to restore, rather than create a restore point. Click 'next'.

You will be presented with a calendar and several dates shown as bold. Select a date (bold) that is before the problem appeared - then select the restore point you want from the list on the right. (There may be only one listed).

Click next and let XP proceed - it will shut down and restart.

That did the trick. So far everything is back to normal. I appreciate your help and thank you for being so responsive for what I am sure is considered a minor issue.
