Thunderbird email won't open, have uninstalled, reinstalled 6X--PLEASE HELP!

I had Thunderbird email installed and working fine for a couple of years and have loved it.  It automatically updates itself, and then the other day it just wouldn't open at all.  After double-clicking (or right-clicking and selecting OPEN) the hourglass comes up for 1-2 seconds then stops, and Thunderbird fails to open. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing 6X already, ensuring that all firewalls are taken care of, etc. and still can't get it to run. Can anybody help? I've lost everything (contacts, important e-mails, etc.) I have run RegCure, and it repaired a lot of stuff, but I just can’t get my Thunderbird to open & access my info.  Does anyone know how to fix this?  I am desperate, as I have 5 different accounts with subfolders that contain important files, plus all my email addresses. :ycry:  Thanks!

Hi Marilyn (again),

I see you've posted the problem in another topic to your first post. We'll deal with it in this one (I'll lock the first post).

First thing to see is if you can open Thunderbird directly from the programs folder.

Go to Start/Run and type 'thunderbird.exe' then press OK - does it open that way?

Thanks Squeezebox!  Yes, I typed thunderbird.exe on "run" and it did exactly the same thing as I previously noted.  The hourglass comes on for 1-2 seconds, blank window shows up for 1 second, then disappears.  This happens repeatedly. I have also copied my Thunderbird Profile to be safe, since it has about 2.5GB of data, I just can't access it.  I am a non-techie, but tried to google everything to do with this problem.  I tried to phone the 3rd party assistance Mozilla provided, but waited on hold for an hour and couldn't wait any longer, as we have a home business -- this help had a $39.95 per incident charge (I was not charged, cuz I was never able speak to anyone).

Hi Marilyn,

I got your message - and it's 18:50 here in the UK. Just for the benefit of others who look in, you have tried to start in Safe Mode with the same result.

Have you tried a System Restore to a time before the problem appeared?
EDIT - just seen in your message that you've tried that. Worth going back a bit further?

Did it appear after an update to something?

I'm off googling to see if I can find anything out. If Essexboy pops in, please join in because (at this moment) I don't have a clue!! (But never say 'die'.)

I can see why you didn't have any joy in finding an answer on Google!!

When you reinstalled TB, did you remove it (add/remove progs) first?

Hi Dave,
Yep... every time I uninstalled Thunderbird, I used add/remove programs.... I did that on 6+ occasions.  Plus, I also restarted my PC each time.  I even tried shutting down my PC, unplugging it from the power source, etc., and rebooting... still nothing, nada, no can do.  I also tried installing an older version of Thunderbird, in fact two different older versions, very weird.  My restore point was over 2 weeks ago, so I think that was far enough back.  And when I emailed you from this website, it was my Thunderbird "write" email window that popped up in which to compose my email.  One good thing, I exported and save all my email addresses  to a .csv file and then saved it in Excel.  Now if I could just get the program to load & RUN!

Well, I'm down to pure guessing now. I hope that one or two others might offer potential solutions ......

First guess is that there is a corrupt dll file somewhere that is causing this. Uninstalling and reinstalling should (repeat, should) have resolved that. Unless it is a system file, although that is less likely.

Might be worth a repair install or system file check scan - do you have the XP cd?

Second guess is a conflict with another program - starting in Safe Mode should have got round that though. You could try opening task manager and closing down other processes to see if anything changes.

Third guess is it might be something to do with running services, or even a service that should be running and isn't. I'm not too much of an expert on that though.

One solution that comes to mind is ditching Thunderbird and importing your saved data in Outlook Express. Won't fix Thunderbird, but at least you will be able to use email again.

Anybody else around to comment?

Could you download this analysis programme and I will have a look to see if there are any conflicts within the start/services area

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt  -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

The first thing I notice is that you have Incredimail set as your e-mail client.  There is probably a bad uninstall there
