I downloaded Incredimail after I was having such a problem with Thunderbird, because I don't like having to switch identities back & forth with Outlook Express, but I didn't like the Incredimail either for same reason.  Since I had already uninstalled Incredimail, I went ahead & reinstalled it, then uninstalled it again.  Shut down my pc, rebooted, reinstalled Thunderbird and tried to open it.  Still won't open!  Am I just simply S.O.L.now and won't ever be able to use Thunderbird, or what do you think?  Also, the adware program you offered to remove, is it a problem on my pc, one that would affect my Thunderbird program?

The adware programme is just a minor irritant, not like some others.  I will continue research on this problem.  It may take a day or two though.

As an afterthought is the version you have now a later version than the one that worked ?

Yes, it is... but, I have downloaded & installed, uninstalled, re-installed, earlier versions, 2 or 3 earlier ones in fact, plus rebooted, and still no success.  I am also experiencing another problem now as well - when I tried to open my "Photo Explosion Deluxe" program - I have been using successfully for the past 4 years to edit and work with my photos until today, the Windows Installer window pops up and says "preparing to install" and then just hangs there, and I have to force it to close with control-alt-delete.  I downloaded an update for it called "WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe" and that didn't help either.  It's is like my PC is a human being with one organ after another beginning to fail, ha ha!  OK, really not funny, but any ideas?

Occasionally, Extensions may cause problems with Thunderbird, including reduced stability and performance. If you encounter problems relating to parts of the mail client no longer working, the mail client not starting, windows with strange or distorted appearance, degraded performance, etc., you may be suffering from Extension or Theme trouble. Restart the mail client in Safe Mode. On Windows, start using the "Safe Mode" shortcut created in your Start menu or by running thunderbird.exe -safe-mode.

Thanks for all your help, but I have now resolved the Thunderbird issue - I hired a technical support company and they have fixed it.  Apparently there was a conflict with Thunderbird and my Norton Internet Security.  But thanks so much for all the research, help and interest.  You guys are great.  See ya later!!
